Brothers and Sisters:
As part of our collective bargaining agreement with the City of New York we won a discussion on gain sharing. I am happy to report that we have had our first meeting with the Office of Labor Relations. It was a general session on the parameters of gain sharing. We are in the process of scheduling additional meetings to focus on specifics.
As a reminder, gain sharing is a discussion between labor and management on enhancing productivity and reforming aspects of our job which benefit our members and results in savings to the City. The savings have to be measurable and would be shared with all agents. If we reach an agreement, it would result in additional compensation beyond the raises we have achieved with our new step plan. As an example, over the last couple of years the Police Department has assigned duties such as responding to collisions and addressing auto thefts. I believe these are out of title tasks that we should receive additional compensation for performing because it saves the City money.
I want to caution that gain sharing is a collaborative effort between labor and management. It’s a series of discussions and not collective bargaining. Both sides have to agree on any gain sharing and it could conclude without any consensus.
I will update the membership on our discussions as we move forward.
